Plants are 3-4 years old, flowering size, ¾” – 1" tubers.
This is a rare purple strain of the species. It is much slower to propagate that the yellow forms. Both yellow strains can produce 3-4 offsets per season. The purple strain rarely produces offsets and it has to be propagated by seed which is why it is priced higher.
A member of section Dochafa. This species is native Somalia, Ethiopia, the mountains of Yemen, the mountains of southern Saudi Arabia, southern Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, northwest India and Bhutan. This species as with our native Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and most Arisaema species are seasonally dormant. Plants sprout from a subterranean corm or tuber in the same fashion as the spring Crocus. Plants of this strain of this species grow 10” – 20” tall. Each tuber produces a single stem that terminates with 1-3 “leaves”. Each leaf is pedate (2-lobed with the two lobes also lobed). Each “leaf” consists of 6 - 9 smaller oblong leaflets. At the base of the two leaves is the inflorescence. Each leaf consists of a half whorl of 4-6 leaflets. The plant alone is very ornamental. The inflorescence is single flowered and the flower opens as the leaves begin to unfurl giving a good view of the flower. The flower is ¾” – 1” tall and about ¾” wide. The “flower” is actually a modified inflorescence that consists of the spathe (outer ornamental part) and the spadix (internal sexual bits).
This strain produces a distinctly purple hued flower and plant. When the plants begin to sprout, the stems, leaves, and inflorescence have a distinct purple-mahogany coloration. As the leaves unfurl and expand the purple coloration is replaced with the typical green, but the stems and petioles keep some of their purple coloration. Unlike the typical form, the flower opens with a distinct purple hue that fades to a lighter gray-lilac. Unlike the majority of Arisaema, A. flavum produces both male and female flowers together. is self fertile and almost always produces seeds. The round infructescences produces green berries that eventually turn yellow then orange. Ornamental in itself.
